Katie Brennan is in a race against time to feature again in the 2018 AFL Women’s season after confirmation the Western Bulldogs star has suffered minor ligament damage in her right ankle.

Brennan hurt herself during the Dogs' loss to Adelaide at Norwood Oval on Saturday.

With four games left in the home-and-away season, however, the Bulldogs medical staff are confident the 25-year-old will play again this year.

Brennan’s latest setback continues the forward’s wretched run in the AFL Women’s competition.

She only played two games last season due to another ankle injury and the 25-year-old’s absence is a huge blow for the Doggies’ premiership chances given they are one of five teams on two wins after three rounds.

“We know Katie will do everything possible to ensure she can get back out there before the end of the season,” said Bulldogs AFLW coach Paul Groves.

“While it’s unclear how many weeks she might miss, she has already started working with our medical staff to make sure she recovers at the earliest opportunity.

“As one of our leaders, Katie will be difficult to replace, but the group of players who have missed selection are working extremely hard to be ready for their opportunity.

“We have great confidence in those players to make an impact at this level, which shows the level of depth in our current playing group.”

Brennan has now only played five of a possible 10 AFLW games for the Doggies.

She proved how much of a force she can be in last year’s VFLW competition when she led the goalkicking with 35 majors for Darebin and won the state league's competition best-and-fairest on the way to winning the premiership.
