Retiring Western Bulldogs star Matthew Boyd has nominated Jason Akermanis as the most skilled player he ever played with.

The 2016 premiership hero played with many brilliant players during his career such as Brad Johnson, Chris Grant, Scott West, Rohan Smith and, more recently, Marcus Bontempelli.

But Boyd told Triple M’s Rush Hour that Akermanis, who spent the final four years of his career at Whitten Oval, topped them all.

“I thought ‘Aker’ added a fair bit to our on-field performance. Especially in his first year-and-a-half I thought he was really important for us,” Boyd said.

“Unbelievable skills. Probably the best-skilled player I’ve seen both sides of his body. He was able to do amazing things.

“Probably wasn’t exactly the best team guy going around, he enjoyed a bit of ‘me time’, but he was good for his first year and then got a bit difficult after that.”

Akermanis played 77 of his 325 career games with the Bulldogs before retiring in 2010.

He played his other 248 matches with the Brisbane Lions where he won three premierships, a Brownlow Medal, four All-Australian jumpers and two best-and-fairests.

He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2015 as well.
