Things look a little different once you spin teams around and rank them by time spent in front.

It rewards the teams that have stamped themselves on games early and contain - or run away with - a lead.

One of those teams that benefits the most is West Coast, who have spent 67.9% of game time in front this season - more than any other side bar Adelaide.

Despite that, they sit outside the eight, suggesting they can hold leads but often let them go.

Last week against St Kilda was a prime example: they held the lead for over 75 minutes before letting it slip.

Teams that have managed to make the most of it include Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, who have led for 45.0% and 42.6% of game time respectively.

Those two sides have led when it counts, winning more games than they've lost.
