Top sporting prospect Will Sutherland has chosen to pursue a cricket career over footy.

Sutherland has had a big decision to make after starring in junior ranks among both sports.

He is the captain of the Australian under-19 team, and has been touted as a top five prospect in this year's draft after impressing for Vic Metro this season.

Sutherland made the Vic Metro side despite only playing school footy for Scotch College, instead of the TAC Cup.

“This was an incredibly tough decision. Most of the advice that I received was to just follow my passion," he said in a statement on Sunday.

"That sounds easy enough, but not so much when my passion is for both sports. I really loved my experience in the recent Under 18 National Championships when representing Vic Metro and this only made the decision more difficult.

"When it came down to it, my love and passion for the game of cricket just won out. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed representing my state and country in the under-age ranks and the prospect of potentially being able to continue this at the senior level is very much my dream.

"I’m excited and relieved about this decision and will now look to focus on completing my Year 12 studies."

The 17-year-old is the son of Cricket Australia chief executive James.

The 195-centimetre tall forward has impressed at footy this season, with the versatility to play up the ground as a midfielder.

He has played one List A game, taking 0/30 and making 9 for Cricket Australia XI against a Pakistan side in January this year.

He made 133 runs at an average of 33.25 and took seven wickets at 14.42 in a youth ODI series against Sri Lanka in April.
