West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern is the Triple M Footy Cbus Player of the Week for the first week of the finals.
Luke Shuey might have kicked the match-winning goal for the Eagles in their epic extra-time elimination final against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, but if it wasn’t for McGovern’s heroics throughout the match, West Coast would never have been in a position to win the game.
The dual All-Australian backman was immense in the second half particularly, as Port Adelaide barraged the West Coast defenders with a relentless wave of inside 50s.
The Power more than doubled the Eagles for inside 50s in the second half (36-14), but only managed three goals thanks largely to McGovern who ended the game with 25 disposals, 13 contested possessions, a game-high 15 marks and a game-high five contested marks.
The 25-year-old’s ability to thwart countless Port Adelaide forays forward was the main reason for the Eagles’ incredible two-point win after the scores were locked at 9.6.60 to 8.12.60 at the end of regulation time.
McGovern, whose tally of 15 marks was also a career-high, became the first Eagle to win the Triple M Footy Cbus Player of the Week this year.
Amazingly, West Coast have now beaten Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval four times from as many attempts.
The Eagles will now face Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium in a cut-throat semi-final on Saturday while Port Adelaide must start preparing for the 2018 season.
The winner of GWS v West Coast will meet Richmond at the MCG in a preliminary final.
