St Kilda v GWS

The Saints had a cracking win down in Tassie last weekend, finding a gear that Hawthorn just couldn’t match in the third term. However, that refrain — “It was only Hawthorn” — is starting to become more familiar. GWS showed they can win ugly on a freezing night in Canberra in one of the games of the year, and you’d think the flatter track at Etihad will suit them better.

GWS by 27

Crownbet odds:

St Kilda $2.65

GWS $1.50

North Melbourne v Adelaide

Luckless North finally got that first win for the season last week despite a Gary Ablett masterclass, while the Crows brought the Tiger Train to a juddering halt in a spanking at Adelaide Oval. North have made a habit of getting close but losing this season, but the Crows are mashing anyone who dares step to them — it’s hard to see the Roos laying a glove on them despite the game being at Blundstone Arena.

Adelaide by 56

Crownbet odds:

North Melbourne $5.75

Adelaide $1.15

Collingwood v Carlton

Both of these sides had rousing wins last week, with the Pies continuing their hold over Geelong and Carlton emphatically sticking a fork in Sydney’s 2017. This match now looks like a tantalising proposition; both sides will be coming in full of confidence and keen to land a blow on the other. This is one of the hardest games of the round to tip — the Pies are deserving favourites but it’s hard to shake the feeling that Carlton can get this done. The Blues at the line of +21.5 looks tasty.

Carlton by 9

Crownbet odds:

Collingwood $1.33

Carlton $3.45

Port Adelaide v West Coast

Port’s form is one of the stories of the season so far, they’ve mixed emphatic smashings with honourable losses to GWS and Adelaide. It’s hard to say what we’ve definitively learnt though — are they flat track bullies or the real deal? On the other hand, we know exactly what we’re dealing with in regards to West Coast; they are confirmed flat track bullies. Unfortunately we’re unlikely to learn anything about the Power this week; with West Coast’s travelling travails well established, a big Port win seems like the status quo for both sides.

Port Adelaide by 31

Crownbet odds:

Port Adelaide $1.33

West Coast $3.45

Western Bulldogs v Richmond

The Doggies haven’t looked anything like their best for most of 2017, but last week’s match against GWS showed they can still call on that effort when necessary (except for maybe kicking for goal). Richmond had their bandwagon spectacularly derailed by the Crows, but there’s no shame in that — better sides than the Tigers have and will get rinsed at Adelaide Oval this year. The interest here is how Richmond respond, they’ve been a club that has crumbled under adversity in modern times, so all eyes will be on them on Saturday night.

Bulldogs by 27

Crownbet odds:

Western Bulldogs $1.33

Richmond $3.45

Gold Coast v Geelong

The Suns have the unwanted distinction of giving North their first win for the season last week, while Geelong had their now customary meltdown against Collingwood. The Suns have key injuries — again — and even with the Cats looking vulnerable it’s hard to make a case for them to get up here. Joel Selwood never plays two poor games in a row, look for him to hit every contest like it’s his last.

Cats by 47

Crownbet odds:

Gold Coast $3.15

Geelong $1.38

Sydney v Brisbane

This could be a tough to watch. Both of these sides have struggled to compete this season; the difference is that you expect it from Brisbane. Sydney are overwhelming favourites to finally break the duck this week, although what they’ve done to deserve that is anyone’s guess. Maybe it’s just that Brisbane are also woeful and playing away. The line is currently at 45.5, and with Sydney yet to crack 90 points in any game this season that looks like good value.

Sydney by 17

Crownbet odds:

Sydney $1.10

Brisbane $7.50

Melbourne v Hawthorn

It took until the second half of round six, but Melbourne finally started looked like the team they should be. Meanwhile Hawthorn are pretty much openly cooked, with last week’s meek surrender to the Saints putting the home win against West Coast in perspective. With Jesse Hogan named, the Dees look a lock this week.

Melbourne by 37

Crownbet odds:

Melbourne $1.47

Hawthorn $2.75

Fremantle v Essendon

Freo have looked better since they decided it was time to play the kids, but the Eagles still manhandled them like Josh Kennedy on Joel Hamling. Essendon had their chances against Melbourne (well, Joe Daniher did) in an appallingly skilled game last week. A trip to Perth is likely to be a bridge too far for the Dons.

Fremantle by 22

Crownbet odds:

Fremantle $1.52

Essendon $2.60
