By Rudi Edsall

Carlton v Richmond

A year of rebuilding for the Blues should start with a loss to the Tiges tonight. Carlton won’t have a huge amount of joy this year, and Richmond should just have too much class for them in front of a bumper crowd at the G.

Tigers by 31.

Crownbet Odds:

Carlton: $2.85

Richmond: $1.45

Collingwood v Western Bulldogs

The Dogs actually look stronger than their flag-winning side with the addition of Travis Cloke, Bob Murphy and Stewart Crameri. Cloke hasn’t had to wait long to meet his old side and should come out with the chocolates here.

Bulldogs by 27.

Crownbet Odds:

Collingwood: $2 .85

Western Bulldogs: $1.45

Sydney v Port Adelaide

Sydney still look just as strong as they did last year and should have no dramas overpowering a Port side with lots of question marks surrounding it. The Swans will be stung by their grand final loss and looking to prove a point.

Sydney by 41.

Crownbet Odds:

Sydney Swans: $1.20

Port Adelaide: $4.60

St. Kilda v Melbourne

Arguably the match of the round. Both of these sides are gunning for a finals berth this year and they both play an attractive brand. The Dees will have aerial dominance thanks to Maxy Gawn but they haven’t beaten the Saints — or won at Etihad — for years and that shouldn’t change on Saturday.

St Kilda by 19.

Crownbet Odds:

St Kilda: $1.77

Melbourne: $2.10

Essendon v Hawthorn

It will be an emotional night with the banned Essendon stars and Jarryd Roughead making long-awaited returns. On the park a strong Hawthorn outfit should have too much for the Bombers who have looked short of a gallop in the pre-season.

Hawthorn by 22.

Crownbet Odds:

Essendon: $2.50

Hawthorn: $1.55

Gold Coast v Brisbane

Both of these sides weren’t much chop last season, but this year the Suns will be able to put something close to their first choice midfield out there. This is very much another rebuilding year for the Lions, and even though it’s a derby it’s hard to see them getting close.

Gold Coast by 27

Crownbet Odds:

Gold Coast SUNS: $1.29

Brisbane Lions: $3.70

North Melbourne v West Coast

North ditched a lot of experience at the end of last year and are set to debut more blokes on Sunday than they did in the last two years combined. Even given the home ground advantage, it’s hard to see anything other than the Eagles dishing out a touch up.

West Coast by 37

Crownbet Odds:

North Melbourne: $3.20

West Coast Eagles: $1.35

Adelaide v GWS

Adelaide are missing a few of their better players, with others under injury clouds. Unlikely they’ll be able to halt what feels like an GWS inevitable march to victory.

GWS by 16

Crownbet Odds:

Adelaide Crows: $2.30

GWS GIANTS: $1.62

Fremantle v Geelong

Freo are welcoming back Nat Fyfe and have the home ground advantage, but the Cats look stronger. A tantalising clash given the rivalry between the two teams, and let’s hope for another Fyfe v Dangerfield battle.

Geelong by 7

Crownbet Odds:

Fremantle: $2.60

Geelong Cats: $1.50
