Greater Western Sydney have traded former No.5 pick Will Setterfield to Carlton in a deal that also involves a swap of picks.

The Blues have received Setterfield and pick 71 from GWS in exchange for pick 43 and a future second-round pick.

Setterfield only managed two games in his two seasons with the Giants thanks largely to ankle and knee injuries.

GWS list manager Jason McCartney said the club wished Setterfield all the best at Carlton.

“Will requested to explore his options and receiving a third-round pick this year and a future second-round pick will help us bring in more young talent to continue to build our list for long-term success,” he said.

“This year’s pick is particularly valuable in a deep draft and it may end up higher should clubs ahead of us match academy and father-son bids.”

Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni always regarded the young midfielder highly.

“We kept a close eye on Will during the under-18 competitions and rated him really highly heading into the 2016 draft, so we’re rapt he’ll pull on the navy blue next year,” Silvagni said.

“Securing Will strengthens our midfield and at 20 years old, although he’s a bit younger in terms of the age bracket we are targeting, he’s an excellent talent who will grow and learn alongside Patrick Cripps, Marc Murphy, Paddy Dow and Zac Fisher.”
