The AFL’s free agency period closed at 5pm today with Geelong forward Daniel Menzel unable to find a new home.

Menzel is an unrestricted free agent, meaning any club could have come with a contract to rival the one-year offer he has from the Cats.

The 26-year-old is reportedly happy to stay at Geelong, but preferred a longer contract at another club.

However no interest was forthcoming, and it seems he is likely to stay at Simonds Stadium.

Menzel — who has undergone four knee reconstructions during his career — kicked 40 goals for Geelong in 2017, putting him behind only Tom Hawkins and Patrick Dangerfield at the club.

However he was dropped for the qualifying final against Richmond due to concerns over the defensive parts of his game.

The trade period closes on Thursday at 2pm.
