Geelong list manager Stephen Wells has ruled out trading a player in order to land Gary Ablett.

Ablett wants to return to Geelong with a year to run on his contract, with Gold Coast and Geelong in discussions about facilitating a deal.

The Suns have previously asked for a player in return, but the Cats say that looks unlikely.

"We had some very good discussions yesterday, and we're hopeful that those discussions keep going today," he told AFL Trade Radio.

"We certainly haven't finalised the deal, but Scott Clayton through the Gold Coast and we will meet very shortly."

The Cats hold picks 19, 22 and 35 in the upcoming draft, and it looks like that may be what the Cats

"I don't think there'll be a player involved," he said.

But they are reluctant to let go of their top picks.

"We are (keen to go to the draft)," he said.

"We've done a lot of trading for experienced players, so we want to keep those picks, and certainly pick 35 is a pick we want to keep as well."
