Ben Simmons fell two rebounds short of a triple-double on Tuesday (US time), but it wasn’t enough to help his Philadelphia 76ers avoid a comprehensive 129-112 defeat to the red-hot Toronto Raptors.

Simmons registered 11 points, a team-high 10 assists and eight boards, but his efforts were in vain as the Raptors outscored the 76ers in the first three quarters to open up a 19-point lead at the final break.

Joel Embiid was Philadelphia’s best with 31 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

The Raptors had six players enter double-digits in the points column and the pick of the bunch was star recruit Kawhi Leonard who finished with 31 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Leonard was well supported by Kyle Lowry (20 points, 12 rebounds), Jonas Valanciunas (23 points), Pascal Siakam (15 points, 15 rebounds) and Serge Ibaka (16 points, eight rebounds).

The Raptors have now improved to 7-1 to sit second in the Eastern Conference while the 76ers (4-4) are now sixth.

Simmons’ compatriot Aron Baynes had better fortune on Tuesday as his Boston Celtics downed the Detroit Pistons 108-105.

Baynes played a small but effective role with nine points, five rebounds and an assist from just 12 minutes of court time.

His teammate Kyrie Irving was Boston’s best with 31 points and Blake Griffin was the pick of the Pistons with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

The Celtics (5-2) are now third in the East while the Pistons (4-2) are fourth.
