The NBA Summer League is usually reserved for rookies being put through their paces as a sort of "warm up" for the season proper.

Players trying to catch the eye of a team also get some court time.

So what's Utah guard and Australia's Dante Exum doing on the Jazz's summer league roster?

“He’s not the young guy anymore,” said Jazz summer league coach Alex Jensen. “It’s time. You’ve got to stand out.

For Exum, the clock is clearly ticking with spots on the Utah's ever improving roster coming at a rising premium in 2017/18.

Team mate and fellow Aussie Joe Ingles is clearly a required player for the Jazz, signing a $US52 million dollar four-year deal.

The 21 year old's showed flashes of brilliance, but nothing to hold down a regular spot in the rotation of a team keen to build on last season's return to the playoffs.

Averaging 6.2 points, 1.7 assists and 2.0 rebounds a game, Exum shot just shy of 43% from the field after a move to the off guard position.

His shooting and finishes at the rim remain key areas for the Melbourne talent to work on at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City this week.

The Jazz have found some depth already at point guard after trading for Ricky Rubio from Minnesota and drafting Donovan Mitchell and Nigel Williams-Goss.

Exum will have to show he can do a lot more on (and off) the ball.

“One of the biggest things for me is I just want to play,” Exum said.

“It was an emphasis this summer just to get out and play.”
