The world's premier basketball league is going back to the school yard.

The East and West format for the showcase All-Star game is OUT.

Captains picking their teams regardless of conference is IN.

For the very first time, we'll see players from different conferences teaming up in an All-Star game.

So think LeBron James playing on the same team as Stephen Curry, and Russell Westbrook and John Wall running a back court.

Each team will play for a nominated charity to which all donations and takings from the game will be donated.

There'll still be 24 players selected for the game with fans, players and media voting for the 10 starters.

Twelve players from each conference will earn a spot.

But the players who receive the most votes will become the team captains who'll get to pick from the 22 other players picked.

NBA Players Association president and Houston point guard Chris Paul was behind the drive to ditch tradition.

"I'm thrilled with what the players and the league have done to improve the All-Star Game, which has been a priority for all of us."

"We're looking forward to putting on an entertaining show in L.A.,” Paul said.

Next year's All-Star game will be played in Los Angeles on February 18 (19 in Australia).
