It's been a long time since Kobe, Shaq and co were suiting up for the Lakers and dominating the NBA.

While Los Angeles remains an attractive place to play, it's hometown rivals the Clippers who are getting more of the attention nowadays.

The hiring of highly-rated former Golden State Assistant Luke Walton was meant to signal a turnaround in fortunes for the former glamour team.

But right now their win-loss record is 19-39 and they're just 2 slots off the bottom of the Western Conference in 14th.

For owner Jeannie Buss, enough was enough.

Not only did she send her brother Jim packing as executive vice president of basketball operations - she also fired long-running general manager Mitch Kupchak.

The Lakers' saviour?

Earvin 'Magic' Johnson.

Yes, that Magic Johnson.

The 5-time NBA champion and 3-time MVP has been tapped as L.A.'s new president of basketball operations.

He'll try and turn around the luckless Lakers' fortunes on (and off) the court, and help pick the team's next General Manager.

For long suffering Lakers fans, change can't come soon enough with some optimistic they'll find their future if they go back in time.
