A swarm of bees put a stop to play for over an hour during last night’s South Africa v Sri Lanka ODI at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Play was halted for 65 minutes after the bees arrived in the 27th over, during which the players had been forced to lie on their stomachs to wait it out while the bees took over the pitch.

However the bees refused to leave and congregated on Quinton de Kock’s helmet, while ground staff attempted to rid the area of them using fire extinguishers and a bucket of coke.

In the end, a beekeeper watching the game at his home nearby came down decided he had to act.

He rolled up in full beekeeping gear with a box of honey to attract the insects.

"When they took out the fire extinguisher, I knew I had to get down here,” the man, Pierre Hefer, said.

"You see, you might get rid of them for a bit, but they'll come back, I thought they might be able to use my expertise."

It worked, and the two teams were able to play the match out.

South Africa won comfortably, restricting Sri Lanka to 163 and chasing it down in 32 overs for the loss of three wickets.
