Aaron Finch has been tipped to reclaim the Australian T20 captaincy in February.

The Aussies will play Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series next month, but with a largely makeshift squad, with most of the team set to be in India for the upcoming Test series.

This paves the way for Finch, who has starred in the BBL for the Melbourne Renegades this season, to return to the Australian side.

And, with Steve Smith out of contention, it may be as captain.

The idea certainly has the support of Ricky Ponting, who has joined the Australian ranks as an assistant coach for the series.

"He's been captain in the past, he's in terrific form and you'd think he's going to be in the team," he told bigbash.com.au.

"I'm not sure what other names the selectors are tossing around, but to me it seems like a pretty good fit."

Finch has scored 354 runs in eight matches for the Renegades, including four fifties, at an impressive strike rate of 160.9.

He also holds Australia's highest ever T20 score of 156.
