Triple M’s Adam Gilchrist says the selectors must believe Tim Paine is the best wicketkeeper in the country and that he can “see where they’re coming from”.
Paine was a surprise selection for the 13-man squad ahead of Matthew Wade and Peter Nevill to keep for Australia, having missed 78 Tests since his last outing in 2010.
Gilchrist - who preceded them in 96 Tests for Australia and is regarded as the best wicketkeeper-batsman of all time - backed in the decision on Triple M’s Rush Hour with Jars and Louie, but not without a sense of humour.
“I reckon I’m a bit stiff to miss out!” he laughed.
“I can see where they’re coming from there…with Tim Paine.”
Gilchrist said he was “comfortable” with the decision, despite the fact Paine was left out of Tasmania’s first two Sheffield Shield games.
“The big one there is the fact he hasn’t been playing Shield cricket, so that’s where the question marks come about,” he said.
“They obviously think he’s the best wicketkeeper out of a bunch of wicketkeepers that aren’t scoring runs.”
