Triple M’s Adam Gilchrist believes there is “a real chance” Chadd Sayers will be handed a debut for the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.

Sayers has been included in the 13-man squad for the first two Tests against England, behind likely Test trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins and alongside Jackson Bird.

Gilchrist believes it’s more than a “token inclusion”, believing Sayers may earn a game in Adelaide under lights to help ease the workload on the three quicks.

“Most definitely, I do think that’s a real chance,” he told Triple M’s Rush Hour with Jars and Louie.

“I don’t think that’s a token inclusion.

“Keeping our bowling unit fit for five Tests is going to be of paramount importance, so if one of those big three, Hazlewood, Cummins or Starc pull up a little lame or have a big workload at the Gabba, coupled with what Chadd’s shown with his capabilities with the pink ball in particular.”

Sayers led the charge for South Australia last Sheffield Shield season, with 62 wickets at an average of 19.00, and has backed it up with 14 wickets at 25.07 so far this season.

“I mean, he’s been doing it with whatever ball’s been in his hand, really, in state cricket for a couple of years now,” Gilchrist said.

“It’s fantastic, he’s been rewarded. I reckon there’s a real chance of (him) playing in Adelaide.”
