It was certainly the most divisive dismissal in the Big Bash this season.

Fans and players were split when Alex Ross was given out for obstructing the field late in Wednesday night’s clash between the Hurricanes and Heat at the Gabba.

Ross was coming back for a second run after pulling the ball to mid wicket, but diverted onto the pitch as the ball was being thrown to his end.

The ball him him and he was given out for obstructing the field – the first such dismissal in BBL history – but says that wasn’t his intention.

“You must always respect the umpires decision, but I wanted to clear the air and state my intentions in the run last night,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I can unequivocally say I was trying to run away from the line of the ball to avoid being hit, as I felt I was going to make my ground.”

Those sentiments were echoed by fellow BBL players Andrew Tye and Glenn Maxwell last night.

“If the ball hadn’t have hit him he would have made his ground! The ball hitting him has no direct effect on the game. My personal feel is not out,” Tye wrote on Twitter.

Maxwell agreed, saying “he was trying not to get hit in the head”.

“You could see he was clearly protecting his body, not his wicket. #error,” he posted.
