Aussie bowler Andrew Tye has stormed into the Indian Premier League, taking a hat trick on debut.

Tye finished with 5/17 off his four overs - including the hat trick - as his side Gujarat Lions raced to their first win of the tournament over Steve Smith's Rising Pune Supergiant.

It is the best bowling figures on debut in IPL history, as well as the first hat trick.

He took the crucial wickets of Rahul Tripathi for 33 and English star Ben Stokes, bowling him for 25.

He then returned for a stunning spell at the end, taking a hat trick off the first three balls of the last over of the innings.

Smith top scored yet again for RPS, making 43.

Tye's man of the match effort restricted Smith's side to 8/171, which the Lions, spearheaded by knocks from international stars Dwayne Smith (47), Brendon McCullum (49), Suresh Raina (35*) and Aaron Finch (33*) chased down with ease.

Only two Aussies have fared better with the ball in the IPL: Adam Zampa has a 6/19 to his name, and James Faulkner once took 5/16.

Heck of a debut!
