England has subjected Australia to their heaviest ODI defeat of all time.

The Poms smashed a world record 6/481 in the third ODI overnight, the highest score ever posted in an ODI by a fair distance.

Openers Jason Roy (82 off 61) and Jonny Bairstow (139 off 92) started in fine style, with the side already on 159 when Roy was run out in the 20th over.

Alex Hales (147 off 92) then came in and continued the damage, with skipper Eoin Morgan (67 off 30) furthering it in the last 10 overs.

Only Jhye Richardson (3/92 off 10 overs) and Ashton Agar (1/70 off 10) did any damage with the ball, with Andrew Tye (0/100 off nine) becoming the second Aussie to concede 100 runs in an innings.

In response, Australia started fast but lost regular wickets, with Travis Head (51 off 39) becoming the only Aussie to post a half-century.

"That was the hardest day I've had in 16-17 years (of cricket)," skipper Tim Paine said.

"It was tough, no matter where we put the field they hit the gaps. They are the yardstick of 50-over cricket.

"Twelve months is a hell of a long time in cricket so things can turn for you quickly. We have six guys who potentially will come back in some will have depth and experience."
