Australia has lost the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings.

South Africa has taken the mantle as the new number one ODI team in the world after completing a 5-0 series win over Sri Lanka overnight.

It marked 11 consecutive ODI wins for South Africa - including a 5-0 sweep of Australia late last year.

“We are excited to be back at the top of the ICC ODI Team Rankings,” captain AB de Villiers said.

“We have had some trials since the World Cup two years ago but have worked hard to rebuild and to gain some form and consistency in this format."

Australia has wavered in the 50-over format this summer, with series wins over New Zealand and Pakistan, but not a single win away from home against New Zealand and South Africa across seven matches.

They may yet regain the top spot before the ICC Champions Trophy in June, though, with South Africa playing New Zealand later this month.

If New Zealand win the five-match series 3-2, Australia will again jump ahead of points, but any other result sees either South Africa or New Zealand enter the Champions Trophy as number one.
