South Australia and Adelaide Strikers wicketkeeper/batsman Alex Carey will make his international debut today after Tim Paine has been unable to get over illness.

Paine has been hit by the gastro bug that also ruled out Josh Hazlewood.

Carey has impressed in the Big Bash League, with his selection coming on the back of a brilliant century against the Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

He has scored 368 runs in the BBL — only Hurricanes opener D’Arcy Short has more — at an average of 61.33 and strike rate of 139.92.

Carey averages 30.40 in List A cricket, with three 50s.

The second ODI starts at 2:20pm AEDT today at the Gabba.
