Brad Haddin’s Story About Breaking His Finger On Test Debut

Brad Haddin had to wait a long time to make his Test debut.

He was 30 years old and had been playing in the ODI side since 2001 when he finally got the call up to the West Indies tour in 2008 — and promptly broke his finger in his first Test.

Hads shared the story on our new cricket show Willowtalk on Saturday.

“I had Mitchell Johnson in one of those spells where the ball wasn’t quite going where it should,” Hads said.

“I thought I could dive in front of fine leg and stop one and I got one right on the end of my finger.

“As a wicketkeeper, you know when you’ve taken the nail or you’ve broken your finger.

“And I knew straight away. I thought ‘oh no, I’ve waited eight years to get here, I’ve broken my finger.’

“So I just turned to Huss (Mike Hussey) who I knew well and I said ‘Huss, I’ve just broken my finger!’ looking for some sort of ‘oh, you’ll be right mate, just get on to it, that’s what Test cricket’s all about!’

“And he goes “I’m not keeping Hads!”

The Test turned out ok in the end — the Aussies won by 95 runs with Hads making 11 and 23 and taking six catches across the two West Indies digs.
