Former St Kilda and Essendon star Brendon Goddard has announced his retirement.

The 334 game veteran dropped the news on Instagram last night, after celebrating at Cathedral Lodge and Golf Club with friends and family.

"I feel very privileged and honoured to have played at two great football clubs in Essendon and St Kilda," BJ wrote.

"I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life with my extraordinary wife and our two little angels."

Goddard had hinted he may have wanted to play on at a new club, but in the end decided to pull the pin.

BJ played 205 games for St Kilda after being taken at pick one in the 2002 draft, including three grand finals in 2009 and 2010.

He moved to Essendon in the 2012 trade period, playing a further 129 games during a tough period for the club, even captaining the side in 2016.
