South Australian bowler Chadd Sayers admits it is "pretty frustrating" not being picked to play for Australia.

Sayers is yet to make his Test debut after seasons of outstanding performance in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia, being named player of the season last year after taking 62 wickets at 19.00 and backing it up with 17 wickets at 24.88 this season.

He got as close as 12th man last summer and was named as a chance to play in the most recent Test at the Adelaide Oval under lights, but ultimately didn't make the cut.

He told Triple M's Dead Set Legends it's "pretty frustrating" being so close and not making it.

“It is pretty frustrating (not being picked)," he told Triple M's Dead Set Legends.

“Obviously I want to play at the highest level and that’s for Australia and I haven’t done that. When you perform over a period of time and you haven’t achieved your goal yet, it is a bit frustrating.

"Australia are going pretty well at the moment, so I can’t really complain."

Sayers said there's not much chat with the selectors about his position, but was told he was close to making his debut in Adelaide.

"You don’t really talk to the selectors much, which is a little bit disappointing in one aspect," he said.

"I was told there was a chance I’d play in Adelaide, that’s why I was in the squad, (for the) pink ball, but I think when they went so well in Brisbane and the quicks didn’t bowl as many overs as they probably thought, then I don’t think they wanted to change the side.

"I guess (I’m) a little bit on the outer, you’ve got the big three quicks playing at the moment and looking at the squad picked for Perth, Jackson Bird’s obviously in front of me as well.

"It’s been a waiting game my whole career, getting into state cricket as well.

"I still haven’t got the baggy green, and that’s going to keep driving me to do well every year."
