Australia's next Test series against South Africa has taken a twist, with another injury for South African spearhead Dale Steyn.

Steyn has been ruled out of the rest of the first Test - and possibly the series - against India after suffering a foot injury, described as "freakish" by South Africa's team manager.

The 34-year-old left the field during his 18th over after damaging tissue at the bottom of his foot.

To that point he had managed figures of 2/51, dismissing opener Shikhar Dhawan for 16 and keeper Wriddhiman Saha for a duck.

South Africa team doctor Mohammed Moosajee said Steyn's injury would likely see him miss four to six weeks, likely keeping him out of the rest of the Test series and putting his fitness to the test for a return against Australia.

The four-match Test series between South Africa and Australia starts on March 1, leaving him with limited preparation.

Fellow pace bowler Kagiso Rabada sympathised with Steyn.

“It’s never nice for Dale because he’s just come back from injury,” he said.

“Just feeling very sympathetic for him.”

Steyn took his career total to 419 Test wickets overnight, three behind the South African record of 422 held by Shaun Pollock.
