Former Victorian and South Australian cricketer Darren “Chuck” Berry has said he’s “baffled” by the Australian selectors’ picks for the Ashes series.

Appearing on Triple M’s Dead Set Legends this morning, Berry said that he was couldn’t understand the process by which Tim Paine was selected as wicketkeeper despite not keeping for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield this season.

“It is staggering,” Berry said.

“It’s probably a question that needs to be directed at Trevor Hohns… I was totally baffled by the process of selection.

“Surely you must be wicketkeeping for your state to be selected for Australia. That is the point.”

Berry said that while the selection of Paine was bizarre, he’s happy with it.

“I applaud the selection because I think that Tim Paine’s a very good wicketkeeper and a very good batsman,” Berry said.

“It’s a bold selection, but I actually applaud it and say ’well done’, because as Hamish (Hartlett, who was on the show) said, [Matt] Wade and [Peter] Nevill left the door open and they never shut it.

“So now they’ve made a bold selection, but I disagree with the process of selection.”
