Darren Lehmann has announced his resignation as Head Coach of the Australian Cricket Team.

The Fourth Test of the current controversial series against South Africa, which starts tomorrow, will be his last in charge, Lehmann announced in a statement tonight.

The surprising announcement comes just hours after being cleared of any wrongdoing in the storm that has seen captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft banned after admitting they cheated during the Third Test.

It also comes hot on the heels of hugely emotional media appearances by Smith and Bancroft, who were overcome with sadness and remorse for their part in the drama of the past week. Plus Magellan pulling out of their $20m sponsorship deal for home test matches one year into a three year deal.

Lehmann said now is the right time for a new coach to come in, and believes the move allows Australian cricket to move forward after a week from hell, telling the media "after reviewing Steve and Cameron's hurting, it's only fair I make this decision".

The 48-year-old added “Saying goodbye to the players was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do.”
