David Warner’s angry confrontation with South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock was provoked by derogatory comments allegedly made about Warner’s wife, according to Chris Barrett in Fairfax Media.

The ugly scenes broke out in the stairwell on the way to the dressing room for tea on day four at Kingsmead, with Warner having to be physically restrained by team mates as he remonstrated angrily with de Kock.

It took Usman Khawaja, skipper Steve Smith and keeper Tim Paine to try and calm Warner down.

It is alleged that de Kock made comments about Warner’s wife Candace on the way to the dressing room.

Candace Warner is on the tour along with their children.

The day was a tense one, with Warner and Nathan Lyon both coming under fire for their reactions to the run out of AB de Villiers.

Australia should wrap the Test up when play resumes this evening, they need just one wicket with South Africa still 124 runs behind.
