David Warner might have dropped a big selection hint ahead of the third Test against India.

The Aussies yesterday recalled Pat Cummins to the Test squad to replace injured speedster Mitchell Starc, who is sidelined with a stress fracture in his foot.

And Warner has hinted Cummins could in fact leapfrog Jackson Bird, the reserve pace bowler in the initial 16-man squad, and play his first Test match in six years.

Australia's vice captain told reporters the side always needs a bowler with genuine pace.

"We know (Cummins has) got a lot of pace which he will definitely bring and that’s one thing we always talk about," he said on Saturday.

"You always have to have someone who is a spearhead quick and that’s always been the Australian approach and we know he’s got that firepower.

"It’s been a long time (since his last Test) and he’s been working his backside off to get his body right for one and it was great to see him come back and play the Shield game the other day and bowl well."

Cummins and Starc are both known for their capability to push into the 150 km/h mark, something neither Josh Hazlewood nor Jackson Bird do.

"We know with Patty as (Starc’s) replacement we’re going to have that firepower there if the selectors go that way," Warner said.
