Former Test spinner Michael Beer has sent a message to Australia's selectors, after the makeshift side crumbled to lose the first T20 to Sri Lanka on Friday.

Sri Lanka won the match off the last ball but chased with some comfort, with Niroshan Dickwella, Dilshan Munaweera and Asela Gunaratne all making light work off the Aussies.

Only Adam Zampa (2/26 off four overs) and Ashton Turner (2/12 off two) managed to have a significant impact with the ball.

And that's what irked Beer.

"Hard to win T20 games with only one genuine spinner in the squad again," he tweeted on Friday night, shortly after the result.

The 32-year-old Beer has been a useful teammate to Zampa for the Melbourne Stars, with a career economy rate of just 6.40 in the format.

Zampa is currently the only spinner in Australia's 13-man T20 squad, with Travis Head and Turner also capable of rolling the arm over.

Spin certainly worked at the MCG last night: Australia's two spin bowlers combined for 4/38 off their six overs, as opposed to the cumulative 1/130 off 14 overs from the quicks.

Beer played two Tests for Australia in 2011 and 2012.
