After 33 years the Gabba's chief curator, Kevin Mitchell Jnr has announced he will retire from the role after November's Ashes Test.

Mitchell has overseen the turf at the hallowed Brisbane venue since taking over the lead groundsman role from his father, Kevin Mitchell Snr.

"The Gabba is a famous, iconic, historic stadium, and you feel that responsibility to create something that Queenslanders are proud of,"  Mitchell told ABC News, "You have to love the job — it's a big part of your life."

Mitchell's role over the past decades has primarily been to get the Gabba's cricket pitch up to its world-class standards - a task that begins straight after the previous Test match finishes, and continues all the way through the AFL season.

After taking on the role in a part-time capacity over recent years, allowing him to take a step back and mentor other staff, Mitchell is looking forward to watching the Gabba Test from next year strictly as a spectator.

The hunt for Mitchell's replacement is now on, with the Queensland State government keen to see a "passionate Queenslander" take up the role.
