Australia’s preparations for the second ODI have been thrown out by illness, with Tim Paine and Josh Hazlewood both in danger of missing Friday’s clash.

Wicketkeeper Paine is battling a bout of gastro and is yet to join the squad in Brisbane, while Hazlewood had woken on Wednesday with a virus.

While Paine is likely to be fit to play, fast bowler Hazlewood’s illness is considered more serious, leaving the door open for West Australian quick Jhye Richardson to debut.

Hazlewood missed the first ODI of the five-match series against England, being rested after playing all five Tests over the course of the summer.

The 27-year-old has been damaging in the 50-over format of late, taking nine wickets at 15.77 in the ICC Champions Trophy in England last year.

Paine made his return to the ODI side last Sunday, making 27 and helping dismiss England opener Jonny Bairstow.
