Glenn Maxwell may not have been the happiest man in cricket following the drama that has surrounded him in recent weeks.

But he couldn't help but laugh at this.

Returning to Premier Cricket side Fitzroy Doncaster this weekend, Maxwell was immediately welcomed back with a quick-witted dig at his feud with Matthew Wade, whom Maxwell has been frustrated to bat behind.

"[Maxwell] walked in and someone said, ‘you realise you’re batting behind (wicketkeeper) Liam Banthorpe today?" Fitzroy Doncaster coach Mick O'Sullivan told News Corp.

For the record: he batted above Banthorpe, with an excellent cameo coming in at three.

"They were all killing themselves laughing," O'Sullivan said.

"They don’t want him to feel glum. There was all sorts of banter going, they were all laughing and carrying on.

"The great thing was 'Maxy' wanted to play. He feels at home and wanted to get among his best mates and his club.

"He’s given us all so much joy over the years and the players can’t wait when he comes back to stir him up and have a yak about everything."

O'Sullivan spoke highly of Maxwell's innings, too, calling at "an outstanding technical innings".

"The strength of character to get out there and bat seriously well, it was probably the best technical innings I’ve seen from any player this summer," he said.
