Steve Smith announced the news at the toss, which he won and elected to bowl.
The pitch has some green covering and cracks already.
Maxwell has been picked to replace Victorian team mate Cameron White.
He will bat at six, with Marcus Stoinis going up the order to three.
Mitchell Starc has also come back in to the side in place of Pat Cummins, who suffered a slight hamstring twinge in Adelaide.
