The Cricket Australia pay spat has now entered the realm of politics, with federal Sports Minister Greg Hunt saying the government will step in if need be.

Players have hinted at a possible strike if a new agreement can't be reached, the current deal is set to run out on June 30.

The basic problem looks to be the governing body's plan to move away from a revenue split, which is what's in place at the moment, that sees a percentage of the game's revenue go to the players.

The players union rejected the most recent offer, saying it was 'underwhelming'.

"I suspect that we would offer to provide good offices, brokering between the parties," Mr Hunt said on the ABC.

"There is six months between now and the Ashes, it would be unthinkable that we wouldn't have a full team."

Stars, including Mitch Starc, have hinted at not lining up in the Ashes.

"I do not see either the players or the administration returning to the late '70s where we had a second-rate team," Mr Hunt said.

"The players love playing for Australia."

"Cricket Australia, knows that this is not just fundamental to sport, it is part of our national identity."
