Further rain and a possible thunderstorm are set to frustrate hopes of either Australia or Pakistan pushing for a result in the Boxing Day Test.

With the visitors set to commence day three at the MCG on 6-310, showers and damaging winds are forecast to hit Melbourne as a low pressure system heads east from South Australia.

Melbourne is set to reach a top of 35C on Wednesday, with the hot and sticky conditions likely to make life uncomfortable for players.

A severe weather warning has been issued for large parts of Victoria and thunderstorms are forecast for Thursday, although there is a chance they may arrive as early as Wednesday afternoon.

The first two days of the Test have already been heavily disrupted by rain, with just 51.3 of the scheduled 98 overs bowled on Tuesday.

Pakistan have flagged that they will look to score aggressively early on day three before sending in Australia to bat.

Both sides remain hopeful of salvaging a result, with Australia 1-0 up in the three-match series.
