Aussie skipper Steve Smith will return home from India early due to a shoulder problem.

Smith had an MRI scan on his right shoulder on Thursday and has been ordered to come home and rest ahead of a crucial summer.

Cricket Australia staff expect Smith to be fit for the start of the Sheffield Shield, which for Smith's New South Wales begins on October 27 with a trip to Adelaide Oval to take on South Australia.

Team doctor Richard Saw says not risking Smith was the smartest choice.

"He has had an MRI scan which has excluded serious injury, but we believe the best course of action is for him to not continue to aggravate his shoulder and allow it to recover," he told cricket.com.au on Saturday.

"He will have further investigation upon his return to Australia but we remain confident he will be available for the start of the Sheffield Shield season."

David Warner will skipper the side in his absence for the three Twenty20 internationals, starting on Saturday night.

Marcus Stoinis has been called up to the T20 squad to replace Smith.
