England has been hit by a late injury blow ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test, with Chris Woakes in doubt.
The quick is off for a scan on his left side and appears set to miss the final Test, according to multiple reports.
Woakes missing the final Test would preserve him for the five-match ODI series beginning on January 14, as well as the T20I tri-series with Australia and New Zealand later this summer.
He has been troubled by his side before, missing two months last year due to a similar injury.
The 28-year-old has played all four Tests this summer for a modest return of 10 wickets at an average of 49.50.
It would be a blessing in disguise for under-fire England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who looked likely to be axed in favour of uncapped spinner Mason Crane.
An injury to Woakes could see him retain his place in the side.
