South Australian stalwart Callum Ferguson's quest for a Test berth could be derailed by a calf injury.

Ferguson has been sent for scans after injuring a calf at training on Wednesday, putting him in doubt for SA's Sheffield Shield game against Queensland starting Thursday.

"I'm not sure how bad it is or not, but I think he's still confident he will play," Redbacks captain Travis Head told reporters.

"We'll know more in the morning."

Ferguson was dumped after scoring four runs on his Test debut against South Africa in November 2016.

But he has since been a consistent run scorer in all formats, with just two batsmen making more runs in last year's Shield competition.

Ferguson was also in fine form in the recent domestic one-day tournament, scoring two centuries and averaging 55.

Head said Ferguson's experience could be a tonic for the Test team in the upcoming series against India starting in December.

"I would love to see him play and get hundreds and put his name in there," Head said.

"He has been so good over a period of time and brings a lot of experience.

"If he continues to get runs and stamp his claim towards December, then I'm sure they (Test selectors) are thinking about him."

With Head returning to Shield action, SA dropped veteran Tom Cooper for the match against Queensland at Adelaide Oval but he will earn a reprieve should Ferguson be ruled unfit.

Squads:

SA: Travis Head (capt), Callum Ferguson, Jake Lehmann, Conor McInerney, Joe Mennie, Harry Nielsen, Lloyd Pope, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Cameron Valente, Jake Weatherald, Nick Winter.

Queensland: Jimmy Peirson (capt), Joe Burns, Brendan Doggett, Luke Feldman, Sam Heazlett, Charlie Hemphrey, Marnus Labuschagne, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Jack Wildermuth.
