Victorian fast bowler James Pattinson is set to play his first Sheffield Shield game since the 2016/17 final when the Vics take on South Australia this weekend.

Pattinson has been plagued by back injuries that kept him out of the entirety of the last first class season, but has been in good form in lower levels of competition.

Pattinson made a ton in the Victorian Futures League and has recently returned to bowling for his Premier Cricket team Dandenong.

"It's only early days – I'm if I'm still standing here playing at the end of the season I will be happy," Pattinson told cricket.com.au.

"I won't go ballistic with it. I probably won't bowl 40 overs (against SA).

"There might be times when you crank it up a little bit ... 15 months out of the game is a long time."
