Jason Gillespie is set to take on the head coaching role of Papua New Guinea's cricket side.

Gillespie will fill in as an interim head coach, taking over the role vacated by former coach Dipak Patel.

It is the latest role for the former Aussie quick, who coached Yorkshire to two county championships over in England, as well as holding the head roles at Australia A and the Adelaide Strikers.

"I'm really excited about it, as much to have another cricketing experience with another team and another country," he told cricket.com.au on Thursday.

"It broadens my experiences and broadens my learning and hopefully it will hold me in good stead going forward.

"I'll be interested to see firsthand how these guys go."

The 38-year-old ruled out taking on the gig full-time, due to his current commitments in Australia.

PNG have an important few months ahead in their push for the 2019 World Cup, after narrowly missing out on qualifying in 2015.

The country sits second on the World Cricket League Championship, the level below the top rung of ODI cricket.
