Australian fast bowler John Hastings has officially announced his retirement.

The 33-year-old has been struck down by a mystery ailment that causes him to cough up blood when he bowls, as small blood vessels burst in his lungs.

He told The Age on Tuesday night he has come to terms with the decision and he is otherwise healthy.

“I’ve gone through an extensive testing process,” he said.

“I suppose the important thing to note is that I’m actually in good health...it’s [only] when I bowl. The pressure at the crease, little blood vessels in my lungs burst."

Hastings played one Test, 29 ODIs and nine Twenty20 internationals for Australia, taking more ODI wickets than any other pace bowler in the world in 2016 with 29.

John Hastings opened up on his mystery health condition as he joined Triple M's Dead Set Legends alongside Jay Clark last Saturday.
