New Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has explained how he felt watching the now infamous sandpaper incident during the Cape Town Test in South Africa.

Opening batsman Cam Bancroft was caught ball-tampering with sandpaper with the knowledge of captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner, leading to all three of them being suspended.

Langer is a well-known fan of Bancroft, and explained on Mark Howard’s podcast The Howie Games how he felt watching the incident live with his daughter.

“They had this replay, and all I can see is this hand with something that’s obviously sandpaper,” Langer said.

“I recognised the hand because Cameron Bancroft has really big hands, and Cameron Bancroft is literally like one of my sons, one of my boys.

“I went ‘Gracie (Langer’s daughter), pray that isn’t Cameron’.

“She went ‘What do you mean Dad?’ I said ‘Just pray it’s not Cameron.’

“And of course it all came out… We were in England a few weeks ago and they’ve done this documentary on it.

“And I was, like, getting anxious watching it… I was angry, I was sad, I was sad for Cameron, I was sad for Australian cricket.”

Langer also spoke of his passion for Australian cricket, how he’ll approach David Warner, an eating competition with Mike Gatting and more.
