Kevin Pietersen had a sustained crack at Australian selector Mark Waugh in the Big Bash commentary box last night during the Brisbane Heat v Hobart Hurricanes game at the Gabba.

KP’s issue was with the non-selection of his Stars team mate Glenn Maxwell.

“He (Maxwell) can bat at six, he can give you a few overs of off spin and get you some wickets and his fielding is phenomenal — he’s a freak show in the field,” Pietersen said.

“Give him a run at six and he will change the game.”

KP said Maxi has to be in the side for his ability to win games by himself.

“Glenn Maxwell has got to play,” he said.

“Having watched a lot of cricket and played in the modern-day era he is one of the better players in the world.”

Pietersen then sledged Waugh for the selections during the South Africa series.

“He got 50 off 27 balls or something (against the Hurricanes on Boxing Day), it was brilliant batting,” he said.

“You’ve missed a trick Junior. Again. Just like you did against South Africa, a few times.”

KP also suggested it was time for Waugh to pack selection duties in.

“I’m surprised you still have a job, to be fair,” he said.

“I would have got rid of Waugh, not just [recently retired head of selectors Rod] Marsh.”

The squad for the third test in Sydney was selected yesterday, and Maxwell — who hasn’t played a test since November 2014 — missed out, with Ashton Agar and Steven O’Keefe coming in.

He also missed out on all of Australia’s one dayers in the 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand recently.

Former national captain recently Ricky Ponting agreed with KP’s assessment of Maxwell.

"I would take him in the squad, definitely," Ponting said on Channel Ten.

"You need a batting spin bowler. There'll be other names mentioned, too, like Ashton Agar, I think his name will certainly come up.”
