Kiwi opening batsman Tom Latham has come under fire for a lack of runs in their home Test series against South Africa, averaging a Virat Kohli-esque 12.

But today he ensured no one will be able to criticise his fielding, taking one of the all-time great close-in catches fielding at short leg to get rid of Faf du Plessis.

Facing spinner Mitch Santner, du Plessis went to play a premeditated sweep.

Latham read it like a book though, and started running behind square to take the catch as du Plessis knelt to play the shot.

He then took the grab on the run with his arm fully outstretched in a brilliant piece of thinking and athleticism.

An incredible piece of cricket.

The catch has apparently inspired Latham with the stick, he has guided the Kiwis to 0/67 at stumps on day two in response to South Africa’s 314.

He went in at 42* — his highest score of the series — with Jeet Raval with him on 25*.
