'We'd like a bowling number six'

Australian selector Mark Waugh is a part of Triple M’s commentary team for the Ashes, and took some time during play to explain why the Aussies didn’t pick an all-rounder at 6.

Australia settled on specialist batsman Shaun Marsh for the spot, after all-rounders Hilton Cartwright and Glenn Maxwell failed to nail down the spot.

“Ideally we’d like a bowling number six,” Waugh said.

“We would, but it’s just not there.”

Kerry O”Keeffe disagreed, saying he’d seen a Victorian all-rounder who’s up to the task.

“I see one (all-rounder who can play at Test level): Matthew Short from Victoria,” Skull said.

“Got a hundred against the Poms, 120 in the warm up game (Cricket Australia XI v England) and bowls off-breaks as well as Glenn Maxwell.”

Australia has made the first day of the series theirs, taking late wickets to have England 4/170 in the 73rd over.
