Matt Renshaw has made his English debut with style, posting an unbeaten century for Somerset against Worcestershire.

Renshaw, coming in at three, was still forced to bat early after Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick fell for one on a green, swinging deck.

He shared in a 92-run stand with number four James Hildreth, who posted 48, before the collapse began.

Not one other batsman failed to reach a score above 10 as the wickets fell around Renshaw, who was the only batsman who looked remotely at ease in the conditions.

In what Somerset described as a chanceless innings, Renshaw reached 101 not out just before Somerset lost their last wicket, being dismissed for 202 all out.

Worcestershire were 8/153 in reply, with fellow Aussie Travis Head top scoring so far with 49.

“It feels pretty good and I wasn’t expecting that. It was really enjoyable and the crowd was really great to play in front of, so to experience it was something really special," Renshaw told Somerset's website.

“It was really tough this morning and I was just trying to enjoy the challenge. It was moving about a lot and I was getting hit on the inner thigh and that sort of thing. I knew if I tried to stick it out for as long as possible we wouldn’t do too badly.

“I tried to play as straight and as late as possible, which has generally been part of my game plan in Brisbane at the Gabba. I tried to take as much of that game plan as possible and use some of that knowledge coming across.

“They’ve got some good bowlers playing for them and a few of the more senior guys in our team talked to me about that before the game and that was really important."
