Melbourne Stars all-rounder Evan Gulbis has been axed from his New Zealand T20 side after a late night out.

Gulbis and former English international Jade Dernbach were both released by the Wellington Firebirds, who play in the McDonald's Super Smash, ahead of their match against Auckland on Thursday.

The two had a late night out before their match against Central Districts last Sunday, where together they combined for 1/74 off seven overs.

The Thursday match was set to be Gulbis' last for the Firebirds, with him set to link up with the Melbourne Stars for another Big Bash campaign.

"Everyone’s disappointed. We expect all of our cricketers to prepare in a professional way for a match and at all other times, training and recovery and any other requirements," said Cricket Wellington chief executive Peter Clinton.

“So we’re all disappointed and none more so I’d imagine than the players involved.

"They were both not considered for selection for yesterday’s game because we were unhappy about how they prepared for the Nelson match."

Gulbis played three matches for the Firebirds, taking just one wicket and making 28 runs across two innings.
